*Roadcheck 2008 Targets Unsafe Tractor-Trailers

About 10,000 specially-trained and certified officers will blanket North America’s roadways June 3-5 to prevent truck and bus accidents and save lives.

Called Roadcheck 2008, federal, state, provincial and local officers will be conducting North American Standard Inspections around the clock for 72 hours throughout North America.

These inspections involve a 37-step procedure that includes items related to vehicle, driver and cargo safety. Officers also will be giving drivers educational materials on various aspects of commercial vehicle, driver and hazardous materials safety.

As has been the case the last few years, Roadcheck 2008 will also focus on enforcement and education of safety belt use among commercial drivers.

America’s economy depends on keeping people and goods moving safely through our transportation system. When federal, state, and local law enforcement works together, through programs such as Roadcheck, we will prevent crashes and save lives.

In Roadcheck 2007, 21.7% of tractor-trailers were placed out of service for mechanical problems.

*Levels of Inspection a commercial driver may encounter

Level I North American Standard Inspection

The most comprehensive of the inspections and includes examination of compliance with critical elements of both the driver and vehicle regulations. It usually takes 45-60 minutes. A CVSA decal is issued for vehicles that “pass.”

Level II Walk-Around Driver/Vehicle Inspection

Similar to Level I, except items that require the inspector to physically get under the vehicle are not included. It typically takes30 minutes to complete.

Level III Driver-Credential

Only documents pertaining to the driver and hazardous materials are examined.

Level IV Special Inspection

A one time inspection of a specific part, such as Operation Brake Check which is held annually. These examinations are normally made to study, verify, or refute a suspected trend.

Level V Vehicle-Only

Follows the vehicle portion of Level I. It can take place without the driver present. It usually takes place at the motor carrier’s place of business during a compliance review. A CVSA decal is issued for vehicles that “pass”.
